Making of

This project turned out to be very experimental. I had never done anything like it before, but I wanted to continue the line of my light box projects, going one step further and experimenting with animation. I used the stop-motion technique, drawing and cutting out all the elements and characters with their articulated moving parts by hand. I photographed them to capture the movements at a rate of 25 photos per second, making sure that the musicians’ movements matched the beat of the music perfectly. The backgrounds were digitally composed from photographed and scanned elements. It was an intense three-month project that tells a nocturnal fable whose protagonist is an owl and the nightlife and festivities of the creatures of the forest.

María e a Curuxa was released in April 2022 as part of Xabier Díaz’s new musical work.
